This morning for school Miriam and Ahnika (her homeschooling buddy) watched Disney's Pocahontas-a pretty terrible show, in my opinion. First off, they make the natives seem all enviro-friendly, which is just not a historical reality. Second, they totally change the Pocahontas story and fill the world with people who believe John Smith had a thing for Pocahontas. Again, entirely fallacious. The true story is WAY more interesting.
But--I thought, hey, if Miriam watches the movie than we can talk about what was "incorrect" in the movie and I can work on Brigham's blanket. Win-win. Good, sound, educational multi-tasking.
Throughout the movie Julie and I pointed out to the girls the parts that were in error. I thought we did a good job.
Then, when I put Miriam to bed for her nap, I said, "So tell me--which story of Pocahontas is the right one, the movie or the book?"
She didn't even hesitate. "The movie!"
