Mom of the Week Award

When Miriam was three we went to a family party where Timothy's cousin played a number on a harp. Since then, she has been devoted to the harp. The few times I've brought up studying the piano (which all my kids have to do for a few years) Miriam explained to me that she will be studying the harp.

I'm totally okay with that (despite it being one of the most expensive instruments to study).

Here's where the Mom of the Week Award comes in: my little sister Lindsay told me that she had a friend in the dental hygiene program who plays the harp so I insisted that Lindsay set up a field trip for my kids. Which she did. So maybe Lindsay should win an award.

I didn't tell Miriam what the field trip was so when she saw the harp in the little room every fiber of her feminine diva heart was thrilled. She said in one of her most dramatic tones, "I am going to play the harp because it is beautiful."

This is Savannah--the dental hygienist harpist who did a great job.

The little faces peering at the harp are Cowen and Emeline. Miriam sat right by Savannah the whole time.

Cowen playing the harp.

Miriam playing the harp.

The other heads are Ahnika and her cousin. I invited Julie and her kids and Lindsay Ann and her kids. We all had a lovely time.

Miriam is the only one who got to play it by herself. She was in heaven. She's been "practicing" the piano all week in an effort to convince me that she already knows the piano and can take the harp.

It adds to my huge internal angst about when to start her in piano. Argh. I always thought I would start her at 8 and then have her do both harp and piano when she was 10. I'm still trying to decide.

This week we started a unit on our bodies. To make the first day exciting, I traced the kids' bodies onto paper and then let them decorate themselves.

They were in heaven. If you want to make your children very, very happy--outline them.

Emeline only colored one sleeve and her hands--but I did her hair that day. I'm so proud.

Miriam colored her fingernails. Clever.

Cowen copied the fingernail idea. He was so thrilled when I wrote his name on the paper that I thought he was going to burst. I hung up the girls' pictures on the wall upstairs but he insisted that his picture be in his room.

Starfall.com amusing all four of my children. Yeah for me!!

Well, Andrea, if she's that motivated to learn piano now....
I told my daughter this past week that if she wanted to learn a new instrument I wanted her to learn to read music first. And what better place to start than with our beginning piano books. She has spent more time on the piano than ever before and can play a couple songs that she figured out. I don't know if this will work long-term, but I am not paying good money for someone else to teach her to read music. Yes she can play another instrument, but she has to learn some basics first.
