Brief Update

I feel like I haven't blogged in months. It isn't that there hasn't been things going on -- I've just been too sick to care enough to blog about them. However, I think I'm starting to improve as my chest feels much better today (I had bronchitis). Miriam was diagnosed with an ear infection and is on antibiotics, which is good because she also has an infected spider bite. I'm hoping the antibiotics will do double duty. And to quote my man Winston: "If this is not scientifically correct, it ought to be."

Miriam is pretty much the luckiest birthday girl on the planet. Today her Grandma Beckie took her and Cowen and Emeline on a birthday date. They played at the park, which included a river, and played at great-aunt Merribeth's house, and made their own pizzas at an official pizza joint. Miriam even got a cell phone that had make-up inside. Pretty exciting stuff.

I'll highlight other birthday events as they occur. Let's just say that the girl had a lot of people plan exciting parties for her . . . and none of those people was me. Even better.

While the kids were partying, I stayed home and did research for my EBW book. I am learning some pretty cool stuff about Utah in the 1870s-1900. For example, I didn't know that Utah women were originally given the vote because anti-polygamy groups thought women would vote to outlaw polygamy given the chance. Utah leaders believed otherwise . . . and when the vote was cast Mormon women closed ranks and voted in favor of protecting polygamy. Then, disappointed, Washington started putting a lot of pressure toward rescinding the vote for Utah women. Which enraged Eastern, national suffragist leaders. Which led to a whole bunch of well, strange bedfellows.

Cool stuff, eh. Lots and lots and lots of things I didn't know. And that, my friends, is why I enjoy doing research so much. Because now I do know. Well, not much but a few more interesting things than I knew before.

Timothy just walked in the door and supper isn't ready. Oops. He's early okay! Sheesh.
