I've been reading books off a list Kami compiled for her 9 year old, Ana. She pulled the books from lists she found online, so being a nosy and interfering aunt I wanted to read the ones neither Kami nor I had read--just to make sure they were up to snuff. kira-kira was one of those books.
The Changeling Sea by Patricia A. McKillip is another. I loved, loved, loved it. McKillip is really good at telling a story without giving you details. Well, obviously she has to give you some details, but she never hits you over the head with the story line. It just all flows together. Her trilogy, The Riddle-Master of Hed, is one of my very favorite fantasies. The Changeling Sea is almost as good. Read it. Now.
