Ballerina Miriam

Tonight was the open house at Miriam's new dance studio (my that sounds fancy for a six year old). Miriam was so excited. We tried on ballet shoes. She fell in love with tap shoes (which she doesn't get until next year if she's still interested then). We met her teacher. Then I let her dance around in the studio for fifteen minutes. It had mirrors everywhere she looked. It had a barre. It had music and pictures of ballerinas everywhere. She was in heaven.

After that, I took her to Target to buy her dancing ensemble--the required pink footless tights and a leotard. There was only one leotard in her size with sleeves. Black. She was sooooo disappointed. She really wanted the hot pink one, or the light blue, but we opted for modesty. I bought her a little black skirt to go with it, but that only mollified her a little. What she doesn't realize is how fabulous she looks in the black. Elegant. Tall. Graceful. I know, I know--she's six. But she is a beauty. The hot pink didn't create the same Monet-ish aura.

However, when we got home and she modeled her new outfit for Dad--her spirits lifted and once again she was filled with that dancing ballerina high that she gets whenever I put on Nutcracker music for her. She twirled, she whirled--she's a terrific freestyle dancer.

She is incredibly excited for her first lesson next Friday. She was in love with EVERYTHING about the dance studio tonight . . . but, I have to admit I'm curious to see if she will be quite so in love with dance lessons when my "dance to her own drummer" daughter realizes that along with lessons comes a TEACHER whom she has to OBEY. Hmm.

Don't worry, I'll be posting a picture of her in her dance outfit as soon as Wyatt brings me my camera. There's nothing quite like knowing you've made your child delirious with joy, and nothing like seeing your child take a next step. I'm glad my dad doesn't read this, he'd mock me forever, but I'm so excited to see what she does with this opportunity. She may be only six, but she's about to start making a dream come true and that is a beautiful thing.

Awww......this SURE brings back the same feelings and memories I have of when Cami started dance......and of course, the memories of HER feelings too.

I am SO glad you opted for modesty. That has been a really tough issue at the ballet studios here in town. I can't find any studio that doesn't make the sleeveless Mondor body suit mandatory. They won't let Cami into the recitals or the exams if she doesn't have it on. So she and I have talked this over and I have said.....this will be like swimming. This body suit is like a one piece swim suit. It's the only appropriate time to wear it. Just like your swim suit.. We don't leave the house without it being covered and we don't walk around the studio without being covered until you hit the dance floor. I didn't want her to get use to the idea that she could walk around in a swim suit or sleeveless body suit.

Oh.....and I agree about the Black! I thought the mandatory pink for the first two classes was "cutesy"......but when Cami hit the age where the body suit (mandatory color ) was black......Oh my! So elegant and classy for sure.. all the ballerina's looked So nice.

Anyway....just had to tell you that. I'll be off now. Can't wait to see pics!
