(I played t-ball.  My team lost by two points.  Dad said to go to Keston’s house, so I did.  Keston went somewhere.  He came back with a slurpy.  He gave me a sip.  Then I played with him.  Then Mom came.  We went home.  I went to help Dad put the water pipes into our field.  Then we heard the car horn.  It was time to eat.  All of us started running.  We had potatoes and corn and shaken bake chicken.  It was hard to chew.  Then for our family home evening treat we went to the K Bar B and got a small ice cream dip.  Derek tricked me.  I ate mine slow and when it was done Derek . . .. )

*The next page says June 4, so I assume the teacher said it was time to stop and I stopped.  I know what comes next though—Derek did that to me a lot. He’d pretend he was done eating a treat then when I finished he’d pull out his treat and laugh at me.  Good joke, Duke.

*Keston was one of my favorite cousins.  He was a lot older than me and had that older cousin mystique.  I remember once he showed me his new bow and had me try to pull the string back.  I couldn’t even move it.  Then Keston pulled it all the way back and I thought he was amazing.  I also remember vividly when he introduced me to his girlfriend—now wife.  I was walking by the park and he pulled his truck over, had Cheyanne get out of the truck and introduced us.  I felt so important.

Dad and I were trimming Dad’s horses’ feet.  Then Dad and I caught Thunder and Talisman.  We bridled then saddled them.  Dad and me and Kayli and Kami went to turn on the pipes.)

*Now we’re at the best part of this journal—the horses!  The weather must have turned nice.  This is what I remember most from my childhood; helping dad with the horses, pipes, picking rocks out of the fields, roaming the fields with Derek, playing cowboys and Indians or white stallion and black stallion.  I had the best childhood.

June 5, 1986

I moved pipes.  It was fun becouse we rided The horses and tide them up so They woodent get a way.

(I moved piped.  It was fun because we rode the horses and tied them up so they wouldn’t get away.)

June 11, 1986

Dad got me up a little past five to ride horses.  The sun wasn’t up yet so I wore a coat.  Dad was riding Keith’s horse.  I was riding Dad’s horse Thunder.  When we were going I couldn’t keep up with Dad.  On the way back Dad couldn’t keep up with me.

*My, how my writing improved!

*Thunder was my horse.  It was Dad’s horse when he was a teenager, but then he sold it to a dentist.  Years later the dentist gave Thunder back to my dad.  He became, most emphatically, my horse.  I could ride him without any bridle or saddle because he was really old and didn’t want to go anywhere.  I told him all my secrets and thought he was the greatest horse on earth.  One of the great tragedies of my childhood was when he died.

*Thunder always went home a lot faster than he left home.  When I rode, Dad would get me a stick to whack Thunder to keep him going.

June 12, 1986

When I got home I caught Thunder.  Then Dad came he helped me.  Then he told me to catch talsamem so I did.  Then Dad caught Keith’s horse Megan rode Talsamen.  I rode Thunder.  Dad rode Keith’s horse.  Dad started going fats Thunder wanted to catch up.  Kami fel off.  She had a had a fat lip and a blady nose.

*Kami, you were mentioned in my journal.  Awesome.

*Who is at fault in this story?  Dad for going fast on his horse, me for not being able to slow down Thunder when he caught up to the other horses, or Kami, for not holding on tighter?

*I remember that trip.  Dad stationed me in front of an exit in the corral while he was trying to get the horse.  He told me not to move no matter what and the horse wouldn’t hurt me.  She ran straight for me and I was terrified, but I didn’t move and at the last second she swerved and ran the other direction.  I was basically a hero.

*Dad and corn nuts.  Love it.

June 24, 1986 (my very favorite entry)

When I got home Dad was on the telephone.  Some men wanted to youse Thunder.  Dad asked me.  I said yes.  For family home evening we went swimming.  Wyitt got into the water for a little while.  When we got home we got a brany.  Dad said the game was to go to bed.

*Mom, did the high school end earlier than the elementary school?  If not, why did I ride the bus if Dad was home before me?

*Proof that Thunder was MY HORSE.

*The game was to go to bed.  Hee hee.  Seriously, Dad, you were and are awesome.

Endnotes

June 24 was the last entry but on the back of my journal it says, “I rided horses.  That is my fraverite thing.”

heiled is probably field.

You know, in my head we were dirt poor in Canada and never had treats or fresh fruit or anything. According to your journal we had treats all the time.
