Cowen turned eight yesterday. It was a rather different birthday than he had planned due to Oskar's arrival four days prior. I was sympathetic as I remember clearly how my 12th birthday was usurped by Ethan's arrival three days earlier. Much like how I felt all those years ago, Cowen wasn't upset just . . . a little disappointed. Mostly he was disappointed that we postponed his baptism (was originally planned for today) due to his cousin Will being in the hospital with RSV. (His other cousin, Wyatt, was also in the hospital with RSV, only in Switzerland, not Utah.) We decided to keep Oskar under wraps a little bit longer.
Fortunately, Grandma R. did what she could to make his birthday special. She made him the awesome boat cake and brought him home to meet Oskar. She also made a spaghetti dinner complete with killer breadsticks and raspberry jello with real raspberries in it. Yum.
I promised Cowen we'd have chicken legs really soon with coffee cake and we'd blow out candles again and he would get two birthdays. That made him happy. Plus, although he has to wait an entire month, he still has his baptism excitement in store.
Presents are exciting any time.
Cowen received a football from his mom, a board game from his dad, and a journal from his Grandma R.
They played the game today and Miriam whomped on everyone. She got the Holy Grail.
Eli playing catch with his dad.
Harriet playing catch with her dad.
The kids looking through all the cool pieces that came with the Indiana Jones game.

Things I love about Cowen:
Cowen likes to have a hard job to do. He likes to shovel snow and dig holes and help me with anything that requires a lot of work. He loves his siblings and plays with them all the time. He is pretty athletic and it is fun to watch him play various sports. He is Mr. Social and always has to be around people. He talks my ear off but I like it. I also love how rough and tumble he is and how far he can hike without getting tired. He's tough. And he gives great hugs.
Happy 8th, Cowen. I love you!

Ands, so I'm posting the wrong place, but I just have to say that Oskar is adorable! Seriously, he is one cute week old--most babies that age fall into the gremlin category, but he is cute. And I loved all the pictures of your kids holding him. Very sweet.
